MMU Most Popular UK University
Manchester Metropolitan University, became the UK's most popular University for the first time with a record 52,750 UCAS applications for its 2011 courses - an 8.5% increase from 2010 which itself was a record year for applications.
Northern university cities – Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Sheffield and Liverpool continue to dominate the table, whilst many of the elite universities have struggled. Overall, a 5% increase in applications to university reflects a surge in overseas demand and more students applying this year to avoid the fee rise in 2012.
Nicola Dandridge, Chief Executive of Universities UK said talk of people turning off higher education was wide of the mark: “A university education is clearly still recognised for the enormous benefits it provides. Undoubtedly, gaining specialist higher-level skills gives people the edge in the job market.”
