The University of Manchester has climbed 6th places to 38th in the annual world rankings league table published by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, one of the benchmarks of success.

The University has made steady progress in the rankings, from 78th in 2004 to this latest high of 38th, and is now ranked 6th in Europe and 5th in the UK.

University of Manchester at nightPresident and Vice-Chancellor of The University Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, said: “Manchester is now tantalisingly close to realising the vision mapped out by my predecessor, Professor Alan Gilbert.  Although we are already planning well beyond 2015, this is an important milestone in our continuing journey towards becoming one of the top 25 universities in the world, and it is a tribute to the outstanding staff here at Manchester.”

The University of Shanghai Jiao Tong compiles the annual list by ranking the world's 500 leading universities using criteria like number of Nobel Prize winners, the number of research papers published in leading journals and other academic achievements.  Harvard University in the USA is ranked number 1.
